Beautiful spaces that can be enjoyed by all the family and their friends
Eight years ago, when Alasdair and his young family moved to what was then a working dairy farm, there was no garden to speak of. Now the farm yard and paddocks are being developed in to gardens, it is very much work in progress. Most importantly it is a home and family garden and not a show garden.
The vision for Silver Street is to create beautiful spaces that can be enjoyed by all the family and their friends, areas that inspire and encourage fun, exploration and interaction with the natural world. Alasdair is passionate about plants and working with the natural vista and environment; his aim to create gardens that melt seamlessly into the landscape, borrowing and framing views to enhance the atmosphere. Ensuring that the deigned areas fit as seamlessly as possible with the surrounding area.
The front area is like a secret garden spilling through the listed railings linking the house to the front paddocks which are home to sheep, ducks, horses and chickens. It is a haven for honey bees and butterflies.
Beech beehives create a subtle beak between domestic and agriculture and allow the eye to flow freely from one to the other. The natural landform is encouraged and enhanced and pleached hornbeams screen cars from the human eye.
The back garden, recently a cow paddock, is home to a fabulous and expansive herbaceous border where the planting flows like a river and provides year round interest. A smaller woodland border over flows with grasses, wild flowers and a camomile mound. Paths through all the borders encourage one to become completely immersed in plants, children to play games and ride their bikes and ponies through. There are zip wires, tree houses and an abundant kitchen garden.
